Pneumatic roof strut vs. gas strut

Did you know that the technique from pneumatic roofs and gas springs is often compared? The technology is completely different, but their operation is quite similar. We are going to tell you more about this in this article. You will also discover how you can calculate your personalized gas spring.

What is a so-called pneumatic roof?

You may have seen them at an event hall before: pneumatic roof supports. Light in weight and also perfect as a cost-saving option. Thanks to their distinctive structure, pneumatic roofs can create large open spaces. This makes them perfect for sports stadiums, exhibition halls, and other spaces where an unobstructed line of sight or flexible layout is desired.

Gas springs: no air but just gas Our gas struts contain a cylinder with compressed gas. They are not automatically controlled and do not contain compressed air. This means that they are not really pneumatic. Yet many of our customers call our gas springs ‘pneumatic’, because the gas springs behave in a similar way to pneumatic applications.

Similarity between a pneumatic roof and gas spring

The term pneumatic roof strut comes from a pneumatic roof. It’s because many people, in fact, compare a gas spring to a pneumatic roof. However, this is not comparable. A gas spring operates on gas. The comparison mainly comes from the functioning of a pneumatic roof. The gas springs react in the same way as pneumatic applications. In a pneumatic roof, the solid structure of the roof is created by air pressure. So, there are no fixed support structures needed besides the air pressure. In a gas spring, the force is also created by pressure, in this case, it is gas pressure instead of air pressure.
